Iditarod - The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, usually called the "Iditarod" and known as the "Last Great Race", is an annual dog sled race in Alaska, where mushers and teams of dogs cover more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) in less than two weeks, frequently through blizzards causing whiteout conditions, and sub-zero weather and gale-force winds which can cause the wind chill to reach −100° F (−75° C). The trail runs through the U.

Jeff King (mushing) - Jeff King (born 1946 in North Fork, California) is a well-known distance musher who moved to Alaska in 1975 and began racing in 1980. A successful sled dog racer, he won the Yukon Quest in 1989, and the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race three times, in 1993, 1996, and 1998, along with many other sled dog races.

Junior Iditarod - The Junior Iditarod Sled Dog Race, or Jr. Iditarod, is a 138-mile (222 km) dog sled race for mushers between the ages of 14 and 18, which is patterned after the 1,049 mile Iditarod.

In the days of the Gold Rush in Alaska, mongrel teams were the rule, but there were also teams of Foxhounds and Staghounds. Purebred sleddog breeds range from the well-known Siberian Husky to rarer breeds such as the Mackenzie River husky. Today the unregistered hybridised Alaskan husky is preferred for dogsled racing, along with a variety of crossbreds, the German Shorthaired Pointer often being chosen as the basis for crossbreeding. Sleddogs are expected to demonstrate two major qualities in their work (apart from basic physical capability to pull a wheel-less vehicle on runners (a sled or sleigh) over snow or ice, by means of harnesses and lines.
